Most duplex receptacles can be converted into "split-wired" receptacles by breaking off the small metal tab on the terminals. This metal tab is located between the two terminals for the brass and silver screws on the outlet. When the tab is intact, both receptacle halves are connected to the same circuit, which allows both to share the same electrical supply.

By breaking off this tab, you effectively separate the two halves of the duplex receptacle, enabling each side to be connected to different circuits or to be controlled independently by different switches. This makes split-wired receptacles useful for providing power to devices that require different circuit requirements or for enabling control from multiple locations.

This method is straightforward and does not require additional changes to the wiring or receptacle components, making it a preferred approach for electricians. Additionally, breaking off the tab helps maintain ease of use while ensuring compliance with various electrical codes when wiring configurations demand it.
